I love Venice at night the most, when the night covers the mirrors of canals giving the eyes a rest from the overwhelming reflections in Venice’s myriad mirrors. For me, at night, it’s easier to enjoy Venice’s elegance and sophistication without the dizziness from oversaturated senses.
I read that Ed. Manet found it hard to settle in the ‘City of Canals’. I was having similar feelings but I would call it the city of mirrors. Venetian canals are mirrors reflecting each other into the endless tunnels. Sometimes it also felt like a mirror maze - I kept getting lost all the time running into just another dead end with a water canal. Canals reflect everything: buildings, bridges, people walking on them and sometimes, it felt, even people’s thoughts. Do you believe that our reality is just a reflection of our thoughts? Well, if you don’t, in Venice it is easy to believe in that.
